Can Psoriasis Be Cured Completely?

Is there a psoriasis cure?

Psoriasis is a common skin ailment that affects approximately 7.5 million people in the United States and more than 125 million around the globe. Those with this chronic skin condition are believed to have a genetic disposition, along with an autoimmune disorder, that speeds up the lifecycle of their skin cells. As a result, an excessive amount of skin builds up on the surface areas of the skin.

The patches of skin that form are typically thick and scaly, and they range in color from silver to red. In most instances, the scaly patches are dry and itchy, although sometimes they are also painful. The bothersome patches may last for a few days or up to a month or longer in extreme cases.

Altogether, there are five types of psoriasis, including pustular, inverse, guttate and erythrodermic, although the most common is known as plaque psoriasis. Those with this form of psoriasis can experience breakouts anywhere on the body, but the most common areas include the scalp, elbows, forearms and knees. In addition to discomfort, those who have psoriasis breakouts in visible areas often experience a sense of embarrassment that leads them to search for a psoriasis cure.

Is There a Cure for Psoriasis?

The short answer is no, there is no cure for psoriasis. However, there are psoriasis treatment options that can give you clear or nearly clear skin for long periods of time, so it begs the question of what a cure really is. Most people would say that a treatment taken once that causes a disease to go away and never come back is a cure. But what if you could take a medication a few times a year to keep your psoriasis away? Is that a cure? Is it good enough?

There are several medications now available for psoriasis that enable you, the psoriasis sufferer, to have essentially no disease and only require you to administer a medication once a month or even once every 2-3 months.

The era of full control of psoriasis is upon us. You can now live a life without psoriasis with treatments that only need to be given infrequently and take very little time out of your day.

At the California Dermatology and Clinical Research Institute, we are conducting studies on additional psoriasis treatments, including a new scalp psoriasis medication and a systemic treatment for patients with psoriasis of their body and limbs to provide sufferers with additional options. While the effectiveness of these new medications is still under evaluation, it is likely that these options will provide benefits to those experiencing mild to moderate psoriasis.

By choosing the right treatment option for your specific case of psoriasis, you can alleviate the itching, pain, and bothersome plagues that form across the body.
