People often think that there is no way to get rid of cellulite. While this is partially true, modern research has developed new methods for removing or treating the cellulite. Let’s take a look at your options.
What Causes Cellulite?
The first step to knowing how to deal with your cellulite is knowing what causes it. Essentially, the dimples in your skin are areas where the skin is attached to the underlying structures of the body. Any extra fat pushing against the skin causes the skin around the dimples to become raised, making the dimples look worse. Although excess weight can be part of the problem, anyone, regardless of their body size, can be prone to cellulite.
Genes play a big role in people’s skin. If your mom had problems with excessive cellulite, it’s likely that you’ll have to watch out for it, too.
It’s also commonly known that women are more prone to cellulite than men. This is because men’s bodies are designed differently, keeping their fat more in place. Their bands of body tissue, known as septae, are sturdier. Women, on the other hand, have flimsier, vertical septae. The fat pushes through easier and is pocketed between the body tissue, creating the dimples of cellulite.
Can You Diet Cellulite Away?
While it is true that the more body fat a person has the more prone they are to dimpling, dieting won’t necessarily remove cellulite. Losing weight can help to lessen it, but only if you do something to firm up your skin. Otherwise, the skin may sag from weight-loss, causing another condition that can be as unappealing as cellulite, skin laxity.
Common Cellulite Treatment
Here are three common ways to treat cellulite that some dermatologists offer:
Cryolipolysis
This is a noninvasive procedure designed to freeze and kill fat cells. It's often used in body-shaping to “spot reduce” areas of excess fat but has been shown to provide some improvement in cellulite.
Massage
Regular body massage helps to reduce fluid buildup and increase healthy blood flow. This can result in better-looking buttocks and hip area. Endermologie, or lipomassage, is a mechanical massage combined with suction that can be helpful in breaking up the connective tissue and lessen the cellulite dimples.
Cellfina
This is an FDA-approved device that allows the physician to make small, incisions at the site of the dimple and then cut loose any of the fibrous bands attaching the skin to the underlying structures.
Treating Cellulite Naturally
Besides getting help from your dermatologist, you can also improve your body’s look by doing more exercise. Try movements designed to firm up your skin and build more muscle, such as strength training with weights. This helps target the areas where your cellulite shows up most.
If you have a personal trainer, let them know that you want to focus on losing weight and firming up specific areas. This way, they can incorporate the right type of body training into your routines.
