5 Famous People With Psoriasis

See this content in the original post

The stars who act in movies, perform on TV, and dazzle us on social media are, of course, only human. They suffer the same problems everyone suffers, including skin conditions.

A particularly unpleasant skin disorder is psoriasis. This condition causes skin cells to mature much faster than they normally would. As a result, excess cells start building up, and they take the form of red patches and scales.

Other symptoms of this disease are cracks, bleeding, burning sensations, and discolored fingernails and toenails. In fact, the nails can become loose and fall off. In some cases, they disintegrate completely. Stiff joints are often associated with psoriasis as well.

If you've been diagnosed with psoriasis, you might derive a measure of strength and inspiration if you keep the famous people below in mind. These individuals have refused to let this disorder keep them from leading full — and very entertaining — lives.

1. Kim Kardashian West

Kim Kardashian West, the businessperson and reality star extraordinaire, first noticed her psoriasis symptoms in 2011. Later, television cameras were rolling when her doctor informed her that she had this disorder. Since then, she's made little effort to cover up the red marks on her skin. In that way, she's helping empower other people with psoriasis.

Kris Jenner, Kim's mother, also suffers from this condition. Indeed, the disease can be hereditary.

2. LeAnn Rimes

The country and pop musician LeAnn Rimes has been living with psoriasis since she was a toddler. She's been a guiding force behind "Stop Hiding from Psoriasis," a public awareness campaign from the American Academy of Dermatology. It aims to dispel misinformation about the disease and prompt patients to seek medical care.

3. Phil Mickelson

Professional golfer and three-time winner of the Masters Tournament, Phil Mickelson suffers from a case of psoriasis that has progressed and turned into psoriatic arthritis. As a result, he must cope with major swelling of the joints, for which he takes biologic drugs. In 2010, his pain was so strong that there were days when he couldn't get out of bed.

4. Art Garfunkel

Art Garfunkel, the singer who once ruled the music charts with his musical partner Paul Simon, attempted to deal with his psoriasis in an unusual way. He staged a show in Israel in 1998, and while he was in that country, he spent some time in the famous Dead Sea. Sadly, it didn't give him much relief.

5. Cyndi Lauper

In 2010, after enduring skin irritation for years, the singer and 1980s icon Cyndi Lauper finally learned that she is a psoriasis patient. Her worst experience with the disease came in 2015, when her entire body was afflicted with scaling and excruciating pain.

Right now, there's no cure for this chronic disorder, though it can disappear on its own for periods of time. And, for some people, it just goes away for good.
